Are You Gen Y?

The Millennials - Due Wednesday, 2/4
COM 130 students, Monday in class we discussed your generation, "The Millennials" or "Generation Y". Here are the links from today's presentation:

What generation are you? Take this media test from Penelope Trunk, blogger for the Gen Y network, The Brazen Careerist. I would encourage all of you to visit their site, and check out the bloggers.

In class, we also watched these two segments about The Millenials from 60 Minutes. Click here for Part 1 and Part 2.

I'm sure all of you have opinions about your generation. So, here's what I'm curious to know and to read about in your blogs:

•Is this you?
•Do you agree with these assumptions made about your generation?
•What do you disagree with?
•What advice would you give older generations to effectively reach out and communicate with you?

In your 500-word response, add some hyperlinks and video of your own Internet research to share with the class. See the assignment sheets for information on using TurnItIn.com.

International Student Interview

International Student Interview - Due Friday, 2/6
COM 130 students, one of your next blog assignments involves interviewing an international student on campus. Chapter 1 of your text discusses how media is essentially the United States' leading export. Think movies, books, television shows, etc. How many young people in other countries learn about us through our media that we export? The text also discusses the "free press" we enjoy here, compared to government-controlled press in other countries.

You are the interviewer, you ask the questions! Let your own curiosity guide you through the interview. Make your post at least 500 words. You also need to submit your post to TurnItIn. Don't forget to add hyperlinks, pictures or videos to enhance your storytelling. Perhaps, there is a funny commericial you'd like to show us!

If you are an international student at LU, you can certainly interview a student from a different country if you want to. However, it would be fine for you to answer the questions yourself on your blog about how the media in your home country differs from the United States' media, and observations you have made since living here.

Wow! What a Week!

Today, KMOV's Julian Grace come to our class, and what an amazing time we had! He had so many hilarious, inspiring stories about life in the television news business. Afterwards, Sara did a great job interviewing him for a segment of Mixed Media.

I warned you on the first day of class that Advanced TV Talent would be fast-paced, to say the least! Let me just say how proud I am of your progress this week! Every J-term class breaks records each year, and you have already done so, and we're only half way there!

2007 J-Term Class: First to go LIVE with a news update
2008 J-Term Class: First to complete three air-worthy packages
2009 J-Term Class: First to complete SIX air-worthy packages (in the first week!) First to log, edit, and voice in the new edit edit suites, and first to use the new set!

Keep up the good work...I can't wait to see what we can accomplish next week! Think of how much you have learned in only five days...and there are five more to go! I'll take some more pictures next week, and put a slideshow on this blog. Meantime, here are a few from today. In addition, I thought you would enjoy some photos of J-term's past...so here you go...

Welcome, TV Talent J-Term Students!

I'm looking forward to working with all of you. It's a wonderful experience to see you on day one, and then to see your improvements on the last day of class!

Great job yesterday...now, if only you would have your textbooks!

Don't forget your daily blog post, I'll be checking it every morning before class. Occasionally, I may post relevant links to industry articles here, so check back often! And, don't forget to visit your classmates' blogs and leave comments too!
